IDNs are far from being ubiquitous and trusted. Verisign, as a registry operator and manager of over 1M IDNs, plays a small part in this ecosystem comprised by not only registries, but developers, content creators, policy and standard making bodies who are all attempting to further internationalize, or locally localize, theidentifiers on the Internet. Therefore, we intend to highlight some of the challenges we have found through our experience as a registry operator and encourage all players to make IDNs a ubiquitous and trusted product for the multilingual web. An internationalized domain name is an Internet domain name that contains at least one label that is displayed in software applications, in whole or in part, in a language-specific script or alphabet, such as Arabic, Chinese, Cyrillic, Tamil, Hebrew or the Latin alphabet-based characters with diacritics, such as French. These writing systems are encoded by computers in multi-byte Unicode. Internationalized domain names are stored in the Domain Name System as ASCII strings using Punycode transcription. The Domain Name System, which performs a lookup service to translate user-friendly names into network addresses for locating Internet resources, is restricted in practice to the use of ASCII characters, a practical limitation that initially set the standard for acceptable domain names. The internationalization of domain names is a technical solution to translate names written in language-native scripts into an ASCII text representation that is compatible with the Domain Name System. Internationalized domain names can only be used with applications that are specifically designed for such use; they require no changes in the infrastructure of the Internet. http://tinyurl.com/3p6ks8b What is an IDN? An internationalized domain name (IDN) is an Internet domain name that contains characters outside of the English alphabet, for example from languages like Arabic, Hebrew, Chinese, and many others. IDNs are creating an opportunity for everyone in the world, regardless of language or location, to be able to access the Internet in their native language. So what is an IDN? It's how we're making a global Internet LOCAL. Why IDN Will Change the Internet The Internet today is undeniably global, but it began in the United States and its foundations were laid in English. All domain names for over 30 years have been made exclusively out of the English alphabet, hyphens, and numbers. Every domain! Convenient for native English speakers, but that's less than 10% of the world's population. The language barrier has been one of the few factors limiting growth of the Internet. SOME ENLIGHTENING STATISTICS As of March 31, 2011, there are more than 2 BILLION people with Internet access: http://www.internetworldstats.com/stats.htm How many unique visitors would you guess visit Google.com on a monthly basis? In June of 2011, the figure given by compete.com is: 150,132,156. But wait! To most people you know, isn't "Google" synonymous with the Internet? Yet, simple math will tell you that 150,132,156/2,000,000,000 is just a hair over 7 percent. The fact of the matter is that what English-speaking users of the Internet consider to BE the Internet, is just the tip of the iceberg! There's a much bigger Internet the rest of the world is using and they'd like to get on it in their own language. Imagine if you wanted to access the Internet, but you didn't read or write English. What if you had to type in foreign letters to be able to reach any website directly? Wouldn't that be frustrating? .WS "WorldSite" IDNs solve that problem. Solving a problem for billions of people is a VERY good thing! The last time it happened, there was a historic boom minting new millionaires daily. ONE WORLD, ONE INTERNET, NO RESTRICTIONS. SECURITY OF CONTENT. ™ January 28, 2011 - Egypt June 3, 2011 - Syria On two days in 2011, a combined total of more than 100 million people were suddenly cut off from the Internet. Which country is next to be shut off from the Internet without notice? Imagine how it would feel owning a business or running an organization that relied on a website being accessible worldwide and watching it get completely shut down due to a dictatorial government. Imagine being a citizen abroad trying to find information about the upheaval in your country, but the website you wanted to access was shut down because it was within the dictator's control. Uneasy feeling, isn't it? January through March, 2010 - China The .CN registry reverses its policy, and requires every registrant of .CN domains to submit a copy of a Chinese business license and a Chinese citizen photo identification. Private citizens can no longer own .CN domains, only businesses. Fearing censorship and reprisals, or simply unable to come up with the required documentation, many do not comply. The .CN registry deletes their domains, taking their websites permanently offline. From Q4 of 2009 to Q1 of 2010, over 35% (about 8 MILLION) of all .CN domains are deleted. How would you feel if you had to submit a detailed business plan and wait many weeks to get government approval in order to register a domain name in your country, only to get denied permission? How would you feel if you were approved, built your business around that domain name, and then had it deleted because the government changed their minds? Today - Worldwide Internet censorship is coming to a global head. Hundreds of millions of people do not currently have the freedom to say what they want to say and how they want to say it, but they're trying anyway. Repressive governments are struggling to find ways to restrict their citizens' access to information, as they always have, but they cannot solve the Internet. People are looking for secure ways to get their published content online for the world to see, for their countrymen to access in their native languages, without fear of getting shut down due to cultural tension or ideological conflicts. For some, the fear of having a website taken down is minor compared to the fear of a knock on the door. Sadly, these are real concerns for much of the Internet's global community. By offering .WS "WorldSite" Internationalized Domains Names, or IDN, Global Domains International (GDI) is solving several serious Internet problems. Not only is GDI allowing much needed native character set access to websites worldwide, we are providing a safe avenue for content distribution. Every .WS IDN comes with private registration, free of charge. With private registration and without geographic or political restriction, .WS IDN allows any individual, group, or company to publish the website they truly desire in their own language. .WS maintains servers throughout the world, and cannot be taken offline by any one dictatorial action. Regardless of what is happening within a registrant's country, their website is globally accessible. By offering IDN registrations without geographical or cultural restrictions, GDI is truly offering the world freedom of access and security of content. The original domain names like .com, .net, etc. were based on using latin characters. However many people from countries around the world would prefer to use their own character set and avoid using the latin characters. International domain names or the .ws extension allows for the use of native based characters to define a domain name. Here are some more details.

Today Internationalized Domain Names (IDNs) are getting more attention than at any other time since they were introduced into the Domain Name System in 2000, but they still have a long path to general adoption. Talk delivered at the 7th MultilingualWeb Workshop (http://www.multilingualweb.eu/documents/2014-madrid-workshop/), 8.May 2014, Madrid, Spain

The IDN Research Tool allows you to quickly find IDN (International Domain Names). In this tutorial, I show you how to use SC-Unipad and the IDN Research Tool to quickly find available Chinese character domains. The second domain rush is going on right now, and there are still plenty of IDN domains as you can see in this tutorial.
